June 10th, 2008 marked an important day in the hip-hop/rap world. Not only did it host the much anticipated debut of Lil Wayne’s third installment of "Tha Carter", it also ushered in some new talent with the release of The Cool Kids’ second EP, "The Bake Sale".

The simple, bass heavy beats provide the perfect backdrop to rhymes that are layered with originality. The Chicago/Detroit duo avoids rapping about the type of champagne they pour, preferring to paint a picture in the listener’s head of sneakers and the white wall tires on their BMX bikes. Not only is the creativity of the subject matter itself impressive, but it is in the overall quality of each and every track that would have one think it came from rappers with far more experience and maturity. Although the subjects themselves may be considered elementary, the end result proves otherwise. It’s no wonder Rolling Stone said to keep an eye out for this MySpace collaboration in 2008.

The Cool Kids are the essence of eighties old school meets twenty-first century. In an era where rap suffers at the mic of many an untalented “poet”, save for a select few, the refreshingly organic rhymes of Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish could set the precedent for up-and-coming rappers to-be. These guys may single-handedly bring hip-hop back to the glory days experienced in the genre’s infancy. So break out your tights and monochromatic track suit jackets, because that’s cool, kids.
