Wolf Parade live up the hype with their highly anticipated sophomore effort ‘At Mount Zoomer’ – fans of their first record will be happy that Wolf Parade has maintained the concepts that created their sound on ‘Apologies to the Queen Mary’ without falling into the trap of making an identical sounding record.
Dan Boeckner and Spencer Krug prove to fans and critics alike that they have more than enough creative energy to maintain side projects without Wolf Parade suffering. From the opening track Wolf Parade continues with their trend of catchy, mostly keyboard driven riffs paired with abstract, drawled vocals. The overall tone of the album is melancholic but sometimes it is hard to say if that is the result of Spencer and Krug’s voices, especially on ‘Kissing the Beehive’ or the lyrics; “All this working, just to tear it down” from ‘Language City’, two of the best tracks on the album.
With At Mount Zoomer, Wolf Parade sets themselves apart from other indie bands with their extensive use of keyboards to drive their riffs, rather than relying solely on the guitar that, combined with casual use of a synthesizer, adds a unique dimension that gives them an electronically gritty sound – a nice change from the melee of lush, ethereal bands that have emerged from Canada over the past few years.
